UK Black Pride and Icon Awards Form New Partnership
Scotland’s Premiere LGTBI Awards Night Announces UK Black Pride as a Sponsor in Kind.
The Icon Awards, an inclusive event being set up to reward and celebrate the LGBTI community of Scotland are set to spark a new partnership with UK Black Pride, to help promote the awards ethos throughout the black gay community of Scotland.
The awards will see 18 awards handed out, with UK Black Pride Phyllis Opoku-Gyimah, Co Founder and Director visiting Glasgow to present and support the hotly anticipated “volunteer of the year” award.
Michael Macfarlane, Icon awards organiser said, “I am truly excited about working with UK Black Pride, we have been criticised in the past for some actions taken out of context, but we want to ensure that the event we create in fully inclusive and diverse”.
He added “it’s very important for me and the team to ensure we are reaching out to all aspects of the community, and by working with UK Black Pride on the volunteer of the year award, and the event as a whole we hope the black gay community will in turn be represented in our finals”.
The final, set to hit Glasgow’s Crowne Plaza Hotel on October 9th will see the 18 awards handed out, amongst an evening full of surprises and entertainment from across the globe.
UK Black Pride, Britain’s most successful grassroots-led, not-for-profit LGBT organisation, is proud to lend its support to Scotland’s inaugural Icon Awards on 9 October. Phyll, Co Founder and Director of UK Black Pride said:
“Scotland has a long and proud tradition of building an open and inclusive society that stands up for the rights of all its diverse communities, including LGBTI people, who make an enormous contribution to the life and culture of that great nation. Whether it is in the creative fields, in public services, private enterprises, or civil society action, LGBTI people have been making a massive contribution but their stories are not always seen or heard”.
Phyll added “UK Black Pride was formed on the back of a similar experience. Our presence has given succor to thousands of African, Asian and Caribbean heritage people in Britain and beyond. That’s the role that the Icon Awards can also play in Scotland. We wish The Icon Awards every success and encourage the community to get behind this initiative.”
Guests to the event already include LGBTI Ally and gay icon Michelle Visage, who is flying into Glasgow especially for the event, and ex river city star Sophie Mercer. They will be amongst stars from across the UK, respected dignitaries and politicians all coming together to show support for Scotland’s LGBTI community.
